Ask Cathy Boo, whose 44-acre family farm nestles in the shadow of the superhighway near 151st Street and Gouger Road.
"I'm caught in the middle," said Boo, who has seen much of the native farmland disappear as residential development continues to enlarge nearby Homer Glen. "It's going to be hard to keep it as rural as I'd like to see it, but we're going to keep all the land we can."
So when community organizers asked Boo to lend out some of her farm animals for an upcoming fall festival to honor the area's agricultural heritage, she was happy to oblige.

Homer Township to spotlight rural appeal with Harvest Day
Festival near I-355 to focus on animals, farming

"I've got animals," she said. "Whatever they want, they can have."
The first Homer Harvest Days is scheduled for Sept. 13 and 14 at the newly restored Trantina Farm on 151st Street about a quarter-mile east of Gouger Road.
In addition to festival mainstays such as hayrides and a petting zoo, the event will feature antique tractor displays and live demonstrations of old-time farm activities such as sheep-shearing and butter-making.
"This community has a history of supporting our agricultural heritage and nature," said event organizer Gail Snyder. "This is a strong component of our community, and this event will emphasize that."
The Trantina Farm, set aside as open space as part of a deal between Homer Township and Homer Glen when the village was incorporated in 2001, will be officially dedicated during the event.
Also featured on the site is the mid-19th Century Austin-Welter Barn, which was moved from its old Bell Road location. The barn will be the site of children's activities during the festival.

Lockport Township H.S. Named Top Five Percent School in the Nation

The ratio is calculated by the number of Advanced Placement, International, Baccalaureate, and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2007 divided by the number of graduating seniors. All of the schools on the list have an index of at least 1.000, and they are in the top five percent of public schools measured this way.
Superintendent Garry Raymond, Ph.D., was happy to learn of the schools latest honor. "This is another proud day in the history of Lockport Township High School. Prepping Your Home To Sell
- De-clutter
Free your countertops, floors, fireplaces, etc. of trinkets and other things that are not needed. Box them up. Sometimes there is also extra and unnecessary furniture out as well. That could make a room appear more closed in and smaller.
- Take your memories with you
Buyers have to picture themsleves in the home they are looking at. When a home is very personalized, either in terms of designing style (that doesn't appear to the mass buyer), or in terms of having photos and memoriabilia throughout the house, it distract the buyer. It appears still as your home. Remove excessive photos and memoriabilia to aid the buyer in imagine your current home and the buyer's new home.
- Tone down loud or unique wall colors or wallpaper
You may want to tone down vibrant paint colors and opt for a white, off white, cream or beige instead to better appeal to various buyers. Additionally, if you have wallpaper, you may want to take it down before your house goes on the market. Some buyers will not like to do extra work come move-in time.
- Clean floors, carpet, countertops, etc.
A dirty house is a turn-off for buyers. Show that you care for the house.
- Curb appeal is just as important as the inside of the house
Don't forget about everything on the outside of your house. A first impression is sometimes the most important as it could set the mood for the buyer. Sweep the porch, trim the bushes, paint the mailbox, replace the garage door lights, etc.
